History of Taj Mahal, Agra
An eternal love story led to the being of the magnificent
Taj Mahal. Prince Khurram, Mughal emperor Jahangir's third
son, married a 21-year-old Arjumand Bano Begum after falling
madly in love with her.
The prince then went on to become the king and called himself
Shah Jahan or the 'king of the world'. His wife came to be
known as Mumtaz Mahal. She accompanied her husband to all
his expeditions. In the year 1631, in one such expedition,
she died in Burhanpur during her 14th childbirth. She was
barely 39 years of age.
Devastated after her death, Shah Jahan was inconsolable and
the royal court is believed to have mourned for two long years.
Shah Jahan had decided to build something in his wife's memory.
In fact, a few myths state that Mumtaz Mahal had herself asked
her husband to build this monument as her last wish.
The construction of the Taj started in 1631 and it took about
20,000 workers to finish it in 22 years. Made of pristine
marble and built on the Yamuna riverbed, the Taj was strategically
located so that it could be easily seen from the king's palace.
It is said that Shah Jahan gazed at the Taj every single day
of his life, and even on his deathbed.
