Tourists visiting Agra are always in awe of the Taj Mahal.
However, there are quite a few other sites in the city that
deserve a visit. During your Rajputana Splendour tour, travel
to the Agra Fort is highly advisable.
Also, known as the Red Fort, the Agra Fort is at a distance
of 2.5 kilometers from the Taj Mahal. A tour of Agra Fort
will reveal that the fort is a palatial city in itself. The
UNESCO has declared it as a World Heritage Site.
Travel to Agra Fort is very easy, as it is easily accessible
from all points in Agra. On reaching the city, a Tonga ride
in Agra is the most adventurous mode of transport for tourists.
History of Agra Fort
The Agra Fort was taken over from the Lodis by Mughal emperor
Akbar in the 16th century. When Shah Jahan took over the reign
of the Mughal Empire, he made quite a few architectural changes
in the Agra Fort. Very ironically, Aurangzeb, Shah Jahan's
son, imprisoned him in the Agra Fort in the later stages of
his life.
Facing River Yamuna, Agra Fort's walls are about 21 meters
high. The Delhi Gate and the Amar Singh Gate
(earlier known as the Lahore Gate) were the two entrances
to the Agra Fort that is built in red sandstone.
Inside the Agra Fort
Travel to Agra Fort means you will get to see numerous marvels
of Mughal architecture. The Anguri Bagh is a beautiful
verdant garden. The Diwan-e-Aam was a conference hall
meant for addressing the general public. And the Diwan-e-Khas
was for hosting dignified guests.
The Khas Mahal is made of pristine marble and adorned
with incredible paintings. The kings' wives and mistresses
lived in the Rang Mahal. The Sheesh Mahal was
the dressing room that had walls decorated with mirror-like
glass mosaic.
The Musamman Burj was that pavilion of the Agra Fort
where Mughal queens Nur Jahan (Jahangir's wife) and Mumtaz
Mahal (Shah Jahan's wife) had lived. Ornamented with precious
stones, this octagonal tower offers spectacular view of the
Taj Mahal.
Shah Jahan breathed his last in the Musamman Burj, gazing
at the Taj, his beloved wife's mausoleum.
An Agra tour is not only about the Taj Mahal. It'll surely
be incomplete without a tour of Agra Fort, the epitome of
Mughal artistry and panache.
